What White iPhone 4? You May Have to Wait Until the iPhone 5
Yesterday it looked like Apple’s long awaited white model of the iPhone 4 could soon be making an appearance. Apple updated its iOS Apple Store app and the white iPhone 4 made a brief appearance but was not orderable. Now Apple has clarified the issue: No white iPhone until at least spring 2011.
The white iPhone 4 has been highly anticipated and this surely has to be a blow to those who have been holding out upgrading from previous iPhone models for the new white iPhone 4. A white iPhone 4 had been spotted earlier this month and led to speculation that the reason why it was being delayed was because the white ‘Home’ button on the front and the phone’s white shell did not match in color. This was on top of Apple’s own mention of manufacturing problems and reports of the white, glass finish leaking light.
Cult of Mac is now reporting that the reason for the delay all the way until spring is because Apple is going to have to redesign the white iPhone 4. Apparently, pictures taken on the white model are washed out because of light leaking back into the camera through the white exterior. The pictures then become the digital equivalent of overdeveloped. The problem is further amplified when the phone’s flash is used when taking a picture.
Apple has been trying to fix the problem but has finally come to the conclusion that a redesign is necessary. Interestingly enough, Verizon Wireless is expected to start selling the iPhone 4 in early 2011. Could we end up seeing the rumored world phone version of the iPhone with a fixed antenna as well at the time? Would this be the iPhone 4 or would it be called the iPhone 5? Apple needs to fix the antenna design in the white and black iPhone models and the camera in the white model. Why not just roll both fixes into one and start selling a new model?
It will be interesting to see how Apple deals with its manufacturing problems and fixing them along with rolling out the two iPhone models expected next year (the Verizon one and the world phone iPhone 5). Unfortunately, neither model will be getting LTE (long term evolution or 4G) network abilities if any of the rumors hold true. Not a surprise really since both Verizon and AT&T are still trying to get their LTE networks national and have been working on getting better 3.5G coverage with improved data throughput speeds that work with existing 3G handsets.
Let me know what you think. Anyone really ready to wait until spring for a white iPhone 4?Verizon Wireless, Apple iPhone 5, AT&T, Apple, white iPhone 4
