Verizon on WP7 and Sony Ericsson Making Two WP7 Smartphones

In case you haven’t noticed, there are no smartphones powered by Windows Phone 7 on Verizon’s network yet. In fact, there are no CDMA WP7 smartphones at all yet. Verizon hasn’t seemed very concerned about the situation though. After all, the company is widely expected to finally get Apple’s iPhone early next year.

Verizon’s CEO even has been quoted as saying, “…clearly in the U.S. there are three major mobile operating systems: RIM, Google, and Apple.” Fair enough. Right now AT&T, which is one of the two carriers with WP7 smartphones in the US at the moment, needs as much help as it can for the inevitable loss of customers that will result from Verizon getting the iPhone. So is anyone truly interested in WP7 and its future or is the OS just going to be another option to push to customers during the holiday season?

Now Verizon has tweeted, “As soon as Microsoft has ‘em ready, we’re excited to offer Windows 7 mobile devices.” A pretty big change in tone isn’t it? The CEO of Verizon even said as recently as last month that the company was not thinking about Microsoft. Did Microsoft do something to change Verizon’s mind?

WP7 has had pretty mediocre sales so far, and highly anticipated Dell Venue Pro is having Wi-Fi problems, possible battery mistakes and some supply issues. No operating system launch is perfect and every manufacturer inevitably screws something up once in a while. Remember Apple’s antennagate? What I want to know is if Verizon changed its mind because it thinks WP7 will have a strong future or if Microsoft is throwing some of its considerable weight around to change Verizon’s mind.

In other WP7 news, information on two phones from Sony Ericsson that run WP7 have been leaked. They will be called the X7 and the X7 Mini. The X7 features a 4.3” screen at 800 x 480 pixels and will pack a 1.2 GHz processor. The X7 Mini has a 3.5” screen at the same 800 x 480 resolution. The X7 mini also features a 10.1 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom. Checkout the video of the two phones below:

Pretty sweet specs huh?

What do you think? Microsoft come to some type of deal with Verizon to change the carrier’s mind? Verizon just being polite? Could WP7 eventually become the fourth major player in the smartphone market? Could the X7 and X7 Mini eventually show up on Verizon? Let me know in the comments.
