Verizon issues LG Ally update
The LG Ally was announced about three months ago in May. The LG Ally was made famous by playing a role in helping save the day in the Hollywood Blockbuster Iron Man 2. The Verizon branded Ally has just been updated, get ready, get set, and go update your Ally.
Verizon Wireless is issuing an update to the LG Ally Android that has recently made its mark on the industry. The update will be made available sometime starting this weekend, and like the update just issued to the Droid X, it looks like the update will be worthwhile. The update provided is update, include or improve on the following topic. The full QWERTY keyboard will be updated for increased operability. Alert functions found within the Ally will see improvements. Improved Bluetooth functions via usability with alerts for authentication and or confirmation of Bluetooth devices. Messaging application will see speed and response time updates, and the Ally’s 3.2 mega pixel camera is to see the same improvements. The new update gives the Ally abilities to manage schedules with preloaded Corporate Calendar applications. As the Droid X has seen in its recent soft update, an improvement to Amazon’s MP3 application will be included. Preloaded backup assistance will now be made available on the Ally as well as enhancements to visual voicemail. And last but not least everyone’s favorite, the LG Ally after the update will give its users to sync contacts from their Facebook to the Ally’s new preloaded application.
We have heard rumors of the update already actually occurring in low numbers with certain Ally’s. So if you are an Ally user keep your eyes peeled as you will not want to miss this update.
Are you an Ally user?
Have you seen this update?
Let us know what you think of the Ally..

This is the this is by far the worse fone I have ever had. And I mean even worse then the palm pre. 1st off the fone and extreamly little space. If u plan on downloading anything you will find urself trying to move apps to ur sd card and deleting others just to free alittle space. U can’t download directly to sd card either. I know. Stupid. The fone is laggy. The screen freezes and stops wirking when it wants to. Mine tells me at least 3 times a day my sd card has been removed when it is clearly in the slot. And to make it better it will reboot itself at random. It hase abunch of HUGE! Useless apps that eats memory. Such as google maps. And thos same huge apps have huge updates. And there automatic. U have no choice but to update these useless updats for these ussles apps. U can uninstall the updates. But it will only install them again 5 mins later. Oh I almost forgot. As of lately prolly a bug in the automatic update. But my clock likes to randomlly open itself and close whatever I’m doing out. Dosent matter if I’m txting on youtube or playing a game. It just opens itself right up. Oh and best part. I dare u go and try and find a fix online. No one has a clue. If ur gonna get this fone put ur money back in ur pockt and go get an evo or epic. Cuz this fone is crap. Prolly why they gave it to me for free.

I’ve had this phone for quit some time. My problem is everytime I go to market it pops up low phone storage. I have errased everything possiable and it still says low phone storage. What is wrong with it?
[Reply]
My phone shows that it’s charging, but it’s not. The red light is on, but it doesn’t say it’s charging.

I’m having a problem with my Ally (2.2.1)- it keeps saying my phone storage is full and will not allow me to send or receive texts. But the phone in reality is nowhere near full! I’ve deleted all texts and I have no apps downloaded! I brought it to a store 3 weeks ago and they said it was some sort of bug that caused this false error- usually caused when the phone system updates were not downloaded. They downloaded the most recent system updates and this solved the problem, but it’s come back again. This time, I’ve tried to download the most recent system update, but my phone is saying I have the most recent one installed. It’s driving me crazy! I can’t send/receive texts b/c the phone storage thinks it’s full. I’ve tried taking battery out and powering off multiple times- but it doesn’t help. Any suggestions?
[Reply]
This phone was a cheap way out for me to get the market on a phone. After using for awhile found out it does not support flash games. And I don’t know if it my phone or the area but now my 3g keeps going to 1x and back to 3g. An yes I’ve done all the resets
[Reply]
after 2.2.2 cant reset goes to blue screen cant read writting then reboots normal junk
[Reply]
Great phone!!! Works even better now that i updated to 2.2.2. LOVE IT. Of course I took the time to download the 200+ page owner’s guide. Now any questions I have I can find the answers to.
[Reply]
Hate this phone. Mostly, why can’t I empty the email teashall at once. Having to select each email to delete out of the trash bin is stupid. But if you don’t your storage gets used up. POS!

@ Anonymous, See note below from Mike. But aside from that, are you using it with Gmail?

My sympathies go out to anyone else who is having problems with their LG Ally. As Eric pointed out, the Ally definitely might not be the best phone for everyone.
Personally, if you are still with Verizon (or any other carrier that still promotes the Ally), its advisable to upgrade your phone. I myself switched to a new phone (Samsung Intercept) and new carrier (Virgin Mobile/Sprint), but honestly Verizon has better coverage in the Upstate New York area even despite the pricer plans.
Other than the LG Ally itself, I really can’t complain about the service that Verizon provided. On the bright side, the Ally makes for a cheap MP3 player even if you switch to a new phone, but the battery life still leaves much to be desired.

Based on some of the comments in this thread, I think this article has some merit: lifehacker.com/#!5795902/why-cheap-and-midrange-android-phones-arent-worth-the-sacrifice
In other words, the Ally isn’t for everyone. If you want more than the basic Android phone, it’s going to cost more than $50…

My LG Ally phone has shut-down by itself. Initially, I thought battery might have drained out. Now I have connected to the power charger still the phone does not come back on (have tried pressing the power-on button multiple times).
Appreciate any suggestions to bring it back to life ?
Thanks !

From what I’ve read (and witnessed personally) a hard reset will fix most ills with the 2.2 Froyo update. Now, you have the ability to move all purchased apps to your SD card so it is easier than before. gain, I had a few bumps as well but a hard reset fixed them all.
[Reply]
just so not everyone is complaining. does anyone know how to fix any of these glitches?

@, Your best bet would be to switch to a new phone if your contract allows for it, or bite the bullet and purchase a new phone. There are some serious issues with the Ally.
[Reply]
I have had small problems with this update. I am not able to use my speakerphone or dial pad. Not happy at all! It just will not work. The phone also seems much slower now. Sorry that I updated!

i hate having this phone, battery is awful and it glitches and breaks way too much

My wife’s Ally updated (finally! thanks LG) and has not had any problems at all. She just had to get acquainted with the newer Gmail and other features that I’ve been enjoying for months now with my Moto Droid.
Hard to know why some phones would be OK and others not. She doesn’t have a lot of customization, but IS using Zeam launcher instead of stock…
[Reply]
I unfortunately am an Ally user who just downloaded this update. Ever since the update I have had even more problems with my phone acting sluggish and randomly powering down or switching to airport mode. I will be trying a factory reset to see if this will address the issue. If not, a hammer might be a better option.
[Reply]
I upgraded to 2.2 and then could’t charge my battery. It only discharges. I contacted Verizon and they sent me a new phone, thinking that that was the problem, and the same thing happened to it when it upgraded to 2.2. They are replacing it again today and I WILL NOT ALLOW the upgrade. Can anyone tell me if they are having this problem to?
[Reply]
2.2.1 LG Ally update is a piece of crap. Downloaded Sat am and haven’t had a phone since. Verizon replaced the phone but still have the same problem. Thought it might be a conflict between op. sys. and one of the apps. Silly me I thought update were suppose to be better. Problem seems to be in the phone sys operation. After resetting the phone (twice) to no avail I started loading apps one at a time thinking an app was conflicting with the NEW updated Op Sys. At this time my phone is working but only if I pay attention to shutting down certain apps with Advance Task Killer and leaving Messenger serv and LG Dun Service operational. Don’t know what LG Dun Service is or what it does but believe it is part of the new upgrade which is part of the problem. Think next time I’ll pass on the upgrade……
[Reply]
The update seemed to be OK for a couple of days. Then the phone started to act buggy. It called the last number I dialed when I pushed the home button. It would stay “ON” when I tried to power off. Then the touch screen froze. I’m heading to the Verizon store now.
[Reply]
It’s a slow running, bogged down by verizon pre installed (and uninstallable) apps that run when ever they feel like it. You have to CONSTANTLY open Task Killer just to stop STUPID VERIZON APPS from running and killing your battery and slowing down everything else you try to do, like make a phone call.
It’s also CHEAP junky plastic. I hate my Ally. I can’t wait for my 2 years to be up so I can replace it.
I WILL be “rooting” my Ally and uninstalling EVERY verizon app I can.
DO NOT GET THE ALLY!!! You will HATE IT!!!!

I have had the Ally for a week now and I done all of the updates and every time I go to my gallery or play certain games my phone randomly restarts.

I really like my Ally except for the fact it doesnt have enough space. also when i try to play a game app it starts to run it then goes back to home screen. other then that everything is amazing with my phone

One of my friends sent me pics through a text message. How do I save those pics to my gallery? I tried viewing the pic and saving it from there but my phone only lets me zoom in and out.

@shay, My suggestion would be not to use the phone’s alarm clock. I ended up waking up extremely late due to my phone randomly powering itself off. In fact, ever since this update my phone has decided to power itself off randomly.

@Mike, Interesting. None of that here, although it has always had issues with correct time, often being off by several hours then correcting itself. As such, not reliable for alarms or reminders. Not sure yet if the update has helped this or not. This does not seem to be a common Ally problem as far as I can tell.

@Eric, Thank you for saying your Ally has had time problems. That really makes me feel a little better since I have now had two that have both given trouble with keeping correct time. The first one I had was okay for about six weeks then one day the time just froze. The only way I could find to reset it was by rebooting the phone or changing to 24 hour time and back again. I am currently waiting on my second replacement phone. Both phones had been hard reset by pulling the battery while it was on and reset to factory defaults twice. Funny thing is the Verizon representative sad she could not find another record of this problem. Yet I had two back to back phones that did. I wonder if it may be due to an app? Though I do not have a task manager or task killer.I do not even have that many apps because the phone has limited on board memory. The few I thought may be the culprit are Chess buddies, My Cast weather lite and Words With Friends because these affect the task bar with alerts. Also there is ES File Explorer. I think this is a great app not only for the file browsing but that it lets you link to your Dropbox accounts. So you don’t need to download Dropbox for droid to access your files. But I’m concerned this may be causing this “time issue” as well. I would like to know if anyone else has some of these same apps and is their phone not keeping correct time either? Thanks to everyone for this Blog.
By the way, I don’t hate my Ally. I think it is good entry level smartphone. I have not had any problems other than the time thing. No auto reboots, no missing files, no crashes, no phone lock ups. It has been a good phone. It just has a few bugs I would like someone to correct with an update. I am currently running V2.2.2. Thanks again.

@RLindsey, Interesting. Regrettably, I never reported this to Verizon since the phone was rooted. We rooted it to improve performance and maybe fix the time thing. Performance was improved using Velocity ROM and some tweaks that became available after rooting, but the time-keeping issues persisted. As for apps, the only common to what you’ve listed is WWF but that was installed long after the time problem started. An engineer friend of mine who knows a little bit about cellular technology said it was unlikely to be software related and more likely to be in the firmware. Time management is usually part of the most basic functions. He was surprised that the phone wasn’t having other issues.
Long story short, just yesterday an upgrade phone arrived for my wife, so it’s goodbye Ally. She did like the phone, but was tired of the time thing and also the slowness on newer apps. And she was a little envious of my Droid X, except for the size. She likes a smaller form factor. But her Ally wouldn’t even run Angry Birds well enough to play it–unacceptable! Her new phone is a Samsung Continuum and so far (one day in), she loves it. It runs an older Android version but for her it is just fine. I’m here to unsubscribe from this group, as a matter of fact. Good luck Ally fans!
i love the phone but after the update my phone started restarting. Sometimes when I open or close the keyboard it would restart.

My wife’s Ally received the update and she hasn’t had any problems to speak of. I found this post looking for help on why her phone sometimes has the wrong time (it did this before and after the update.) I use my Droid as an alarm clock, but when she wakes up at 7 and her phone reads 2:44 PM, it definitely would FAIL as an alarm clock. I don’t know if this affects timestamps on txt messages. Oddly, cycling it off and back on doesn’t always reset! I’m really not sure what’s going on there, but otherwise she’s not having any issues to speak of related to the update.

Hey Bobby~
Go to Settings->About Phone and scroll down to the SW Version. If you have the latest and greatest version, it should read “VS740VZB”. If not, then you’re due an upgrade. If for some reason it was not pushed to you via Verizon OTA, then stop by your nearest company store and get them to load it for you. It does work much better with this update. Battery life is far better, and the “50%” bug is gone. Sure, you’ll get a few more apps you may not want, but I feel it’s a fair trade. Good luck!

I have an ally and it says update next to the current firmware (2.1)
I go to the check for update bar and it says I’m up to date..wtf
[Reply]
Well. I’m on my 3rd Ally now. After experiencing significant email problems (I’ve learned that while the ver 8 update adds Corporate calendar functionality, if yo have it sync’d, it locks up your email app! Not good.) and some serious battery life issues, I returned that unit for a new one. The update came almost immediately, and I, not knowing any better, said “yes”…and the troubles started happening again, only this time the unit wouldn’t take a charge.
So I brought that one back, and when I got this latest one, I’ve declined the updates every time they pop up. So far, this one had been flawless.
That convinces me that there is definitely a problem with the update.
My advice to anyone on Ver 6, don’t do the ver 8 update. Wait for 2.2 like me and I think you’ll be much happier.
Oh, and as far as the phone goes, it’s great!

Broke in 5 days
[Reply]
I just received my Ally yesterday by mail. Set it up and activated it. Within 5 minutes, the software update was pushed to me, so I never had time to try it out without the update.
While the screen seems fast, I never saw it slower. However, there are two issues that are causing me to swap it for a replacement:
1). The phone won’t stay off when charging – it spontaneously restarts itself. If it’s not plugged in, it will stay off. As far as “sleep” goes, haven’t seen it. Just screen lock when charging, same as sitting idle.
2). Email receipt is instantaneous (big plus from Blackberry!) but I have literally 5 seconds to view an email, and it switches back to the list screen. If I try to reply, it switches back to the home screen before I can get my typing done.
Besides those things, the keyboard is excellent, the screen is brilliant, and it surfs the web as fast as my 80211 N laptop! PDA Net was a bit tricky to install, but the speed while using is as good as my wireless network! (this was quite a pleasant surprise).
Long and short – great phone, lots of strong features and functionality, just fix these bugs and I’ll be thrilled.
Hey Brandon – from what I read, yo may not want to do the update! :-O

I have the Ally & did the update. BIG MISTAKE. Phone would power off/on every 15 minutes. It would also power off during phone calls. Powering the phone back up would take 5+minutes. There was a host of other things but those were the worst. Took it back to verizon twice and they did some *228 thing to it. ??? After 2 days of this nonsense I demanded a replacement. Needless to say I have NOT done the update but am annoyed that a pop up window keeps reminding me to update…. LG you need to update the update.

I also recieved the update 1 patch about 2 days ago. ever since my ally keep shutting off for no reason. some times it comes back on with out doing any thing and some times I have to pull the battery and put it in and then it will let me turn it on. It also keeps loosing service completly for no reason and then resets and comes back on. When it does this, the vcast manager app also restarts.
So, the things I have done to resolve this issue. Force stop on backup assistant, don’t need it since almost every one uses gmail sync, only used it one time and that was to get my contacts from my old phone. Even then I had to wait for the original fix for it, since it said my password was wrong every time. 2nd, forced stop on the vcast manager, not happy about this as it is great entertainment for my kids.
so far with those 2 things the phone not works correctly again and I have not had the problem since. .
I can’t wait for the android 2.2 to come out for the adobe flash 10.1 then I wont need vcast any more and can save money on my bill.
Happy Droiding and hope this helps some people.
