The Sony Xperia U Makes Its Way to Availability in the UK
At the Mobile World Conference this year Sony was freshly single after a long and seemingly excellent relationship with partner in crime Ericsson. Sony did not waste much time in showing off their future, sans the Ericsson branding. Building on the well established Xperia NXT series devices Sony announced the Xperia P and Xperia U at MWC while the third Xperia S was previously announced at the CES conference. With the Xperia UI and access to Sony’s Entertainment Network the hype surrounding these handsets has grown. All of these handsets have been approved for gaming gold with the Playstation certification and now, at least one carrier will get to call the Xperia U an available option.
News of the Xperia U’s availability has surfaced to the top of the mobile world today as the UK based carrier Three UK has announced they will be offering up the device. The Xperia U is currently on sale for a flat £170 or $269 without a plan or free depending on your choice of a 2 year contractual plan. Plans for the Xperia U’s release other UK carriers such as T-Mobile UK, Orange and O2 are in the wood work and should be available very soon. So what can you expect from the Xperia U? Well its Playstation certified, what else do you need? The design of the Xperia U is quite obviously a “slate” or “bar” styled design but it adds a little quark toward the bottom. A small transparent bar that seemingly separates the device glows in multiple colors and also houses the main Android based navigational keys. Specs wise, the Xperia U is no slouch and well worth its initial asking price. It starts with the power of Android version 2.3 and the likes of Sony’s Xperia UI. At a mere 12 mm thin the body of this new handset houses a “3.5 inch FWVGA Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine” that provides a 480×854 pixel resolution at 280 pixels per inch. Delving internally the Xperia U just gets better. A 1320 mAh battery should lend itself to allow for up to 6.6 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time. Internally it will run with a more than capable 1 GHz dual core STE U8500 chip set that will get some help from an DB8500 graphics processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Around back the new Xperia U has a 5 mega pixel camera that sports and LED flash, Auto focus, face detection, panorama mode, geo tagging, digital zooming and 720p HD video recording. Up front a 0.3 mega pixel VGA quality front facing shooter is available for all your “video conferencing” needs. Other details give the Xperia U, Bluetooth version 2.1 with A2DP and EDR, micro USB connectivity, DLNA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and even HotSpot functionality. Amazing amount of functionality for a little price tag. Like color options? Well the Xperia U will come in black or white with your choice of white, black, pink and yellow bottom caps for U.
