Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone Possibly Launching December 9th
Sony Ericsson is holding an event for its yet unannounced PlayStation Phone codenamed ‘Zeus’ according to French language tech blog NoWhereElse. The invitation for the event prominently displays the four iconic PlayStation controller buttons and a fifth icon which is most definitely depicts a phone. While this has not been confirmed, we might hear the first official news on Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation Phone on December 9th when this event is supposedly taking place.
The invitation itself says “the most anticipated presentation of the past 10 years” on it and that the event will be held at 8PM. Pierre Perron (Sony Ericsson France) is the event holder. This a fake? Pictures of the PlayStation Phone have been popping up everywhere and Engadget keeps reassuring everyone that it sources say the PlayStation Phone is real so your guess is as good as mine. If this is real, don’t expect the smartphone/gaming machine to come out before the holidays but rather just an announcement of an early 2011 release.
Rumored specs of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone ‘Zeus’:
- 3.7” to 4.1” screen (exact size not known yet)
- 1 GHz processor by Qualcomm (MSM8655)
- 512 MB of RAM
- 1 GB ROM
- microSD support (no Sony Memory Stick slot)
- Horizontally sliding PlayStation controller instead of QWERTY keyboard
- Android OS (rumored to be Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’)
I know this isn’t much to go on yet, but Sony certainly has to have some type of plan to get into the Android game and put some pep back into its portable gaming division. The PSP is getting really long in the tooth and most high-end smartphones can already kick its butt in the graphics department. Apple’s iOS even has the Unreal 3 Engine now. If Sony doesn’t figure out something and fast, iOS is poised to become the next big mobile gaming system behind Nintendo. Don’t believe me? Apple already has sold more iOS devices in the US than Sony has sold PSPs.
Think the PlayStation Phone will finally be announced this December or will we have to wait even longer to hear anything official? At this point, a PlayStation Phone is looking like something that should have come out back in 2007 or 2008. Anyone still really want one of these?
