The Sony Ericsson Active Billabong Edition
You may have heard of the recently announced departure Sony will be taking from Ericsson in the mobile world. With the announcement just a few weeks under the rug it seems that Sony is wasting no time in ‘reinventing’ themselves. While the recently announced Xperia S and Xperia Ion seemingly made san’s Ericsson future of Sony official, it looks as if the SE branding is not completely out of the woods yet. While the deal on the separation was said to be closed come January 2012, some of the Sony Ericsson branded phones that have been waiting in the wings are becoming a reality.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Active was introduced in June of last year alongside the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray and has just gotten a makeover from the super stoked Billabong crew. Ironically enough the Sony Ericsson Active fits into the Billabong lifestyle like bikinis and board wax! So what can you expect from the Surf, Snow, Skate and Wake Xperia Active? Not much more than what the Active is already offering, but a super cool Billabong branded design goes a long way! According to the press release the Xperia Active Billabong edition is “designed with extreme sports enthusiast in mind”. While the original Active most likely filled that niche, the two companies are joining up to push the market a bit further. So why is the Active a good fit for the extreme sports enthusiast around the world? A bit of water proofing a bit of shock proofing and there you have it! The Xperia Active sports a 3 inch Mobile Bravia display that provides a 320×480 pixel resolution and is built within a super rugged housing. Lanyard loops as large as the one on the Active is also tell all for extreme abilities. With great waterproofing come great screen responsibilities. The Actvie comes with a unique “wet finger tracking” technology that will allow easy touch screen functionality with wet fingers. If that’s not really cool to you try using a wet finger on your phone. Internally the Active is surely not a super phone, but perfect for the active lifestyle. It comes packing a 1GHz processor that is backed by 512 MB of RAM and will give Android 2.3 or Gingerbread its go. Around back it carries a 5 mega pixel camera that can record video in 720p HD. The Active can also be held under up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The Active is also pimping ANT+ radio technologies that will allow its users to monitor their heart rate on screen.
