Rumor: Samsung 2 GHz Dual Core Smartphone Processors By Next Year

If you’re unaware the age of super fast processing is upon us. In the past few years we have inched closer and closer to smart phones with the processing power of average desktop PC’s. This movement is evident in the laptop world as well but what’s next? When the last slew of devices hit the market, all I could say was really 1GHz processing in my phone? I have to have it. As operating systems on phones become more intuitive and programs or ‘apps’ as the worlds calling them, become more complex the need for speed becomes greater. When these two paradigms coexist we get from 1GHz processors to 1.2 dual core and we are now on the brink of 2GHz dual core, in a matter of a few short years – ahh isn’t evolution amazing.

Some news sprouted up today surrounding Samsung and their never ending quest to improve upon the improvable. Today Maeil Business Newspaper a Korean based newspaper and blog exposed a few quotes surrounding Samsung’s future in the world of gigahertz. The source claims that a high-ranking official from Samsung has been quoted saying “We are planning to release a 2 GHz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year. This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC”. The information goes on to state that Samsung will offer these processors up to other phone makers as well, which is surely assumed. While this bit of information is surely un-official it’s not unexpected or shocking, it is simply just a matter of time.

It’s been about two years since the world got their hands on 1 GHz powered smartphones and we have never been the same since. In the arms race to power and speed it seems that Samsung is taking the first leap forward. But do we need all this power in our smartphones? Hell yea we do. And to put this into perspective in case you’re wondering what the hub-bub is all about. The computer I’m typing this on stands about a foot high, makes all kinds of noise and runs at 2.4 GHz. I know I know the screen, this that there are so many variables I know.

Pushing the envelope like this in the mobile space is surely a bit more evidence of the dawn of the post-pc era. As more companies move to smaller higher powered devices, we may truly be watching the extinction of PC’s as we know them. What do you think? Is a 2 GHz processor in a smartphone the start of something revolutionary? Or am I crazy, deranged and obviously don’t know what I’m talking about?
