The Palm Pre 2 Coming to Verizon this Year

The Palm faithful have reason to rejoice—the Palm Pre 2 will be available for sale on Verizon Wireless this year according to leaked Verizon document. The document, which was acquired by PPCGeeks, doesn’t shed any new information on the Pre 2, but it does confirm that Verizon will start selling the model soon. Thank the smartphone gods.

Specs on the Palm Pre 2 from Verizon:

  • 1 GHz processor
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • 16 GB of internal storage
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • 3G mobile hotspot abilities
  • GPS, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth
  • Adobe Flash 10.1
  • HP webOS 2.0

Interestingly, Verizon has some of its internal marketing information on the Pre 2 on the leaked document. So who does Verizon think wants a Pre 2? “Target Customers: Singles, Couples, Young Adults, Small/Medium Business, Enterprise.” That’s pretty much everyone but the elderly. The “Primary Use” of the Pre 2 according to Verizon? “Designed for professionals as well as traditional consumers who rely heavily on both messaging, including email and voice, to stay connected.” Duh. Isn’t that the use for every smartphone made since category first started?

Now we have to twiddle our thumbs and wait for Verizon and Palm/HP to get the Pre 2 into stores. You just know the Pixi 2 will be close behind even though we’ve heard hardly a peep about it. The original Pixi and Pixi Plus are both not getting Adobe Flash (though the entire Pre series will through the coming webOS 2.0 update). At least four new Palm devices are going to launch next year, so this is just the beginning of the Palm revival. Personally, I’m most excited about the rumored Palm ‘Mansion’ which is touchscreen only. However, the recent leak of Palm device codenames doesn’t mention the Mansion so who knows where that is in development or if it has since been canceled.

Has Palm changed enough with the Pre 2 to make it worth the price to upgrade from a previous Pre model? That’s a good question. I have a feeling that the next batch of Palm models that arrive next year will be a much bigger jump than the Pre 2 is from the Pre Plus.

Now we just need to know the pricing from Verizon, the actual launch or pre-order date and what other carriers in the US will eventually carry the Pre 2. I’m excited that Palm is stepping back into the game. More competition means better smartphones for everyone.
