Future Multi-core BlackBerrys Will Run QNX’s PlayBook OS, Verizon Launching BB OS 6 Soon
Research In Motion’s Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis spoke last night at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference and when he wasn’t confusing the heck out of the interviewers or the crowd he did mention that RIM’s recently acquired QNX division’s PlayBook tablet OS will appear on BlackBerry smartphones once they transition to dual-core processors. Unfortunately, there is no timeline yet as to when BlackBerry smart phones will start receiving dual-core processors. Also, a flyer being mailed out by Verizon Wireless mentions all the new features in BlackBerry OS 6 and showcases the Bold 9650 and the Curve 3G 9330. Lots of exciting news here!
Lazaridis didn’t make much sense at all when he spoke and looked like a deer in the headlights when questioned why it keeps using old (read 2008) processor and storage technology in its smart phones. However, the interviewers did manage to get him to admit that the PlayBook OS will not transition down to BlackBerry phones until they are updated to dual-core processors since that’s what QNX’s operating system is designed for. It looks like every current BlackBerry smart phone in existence will be left out. Bummer.
RIM also apparently sees the smartphone/tablet market as three separate categories: phones, super phones and tablets. Lazaridis criticized Google and Apple for trying to upscale their Android and iOS operating systems to tablets but obviously has plans to downscale its own tablet OS to smart phones. Kind of… inconsistent isn’t he?
The even bigger news out of all of this for many BlackBerry owners is that Verizon obviously has plans to get the Bold 9650 running BB OS 6 as soon as possible. Unlike the nearly identical Bold 9700 model, the 9650 has 512 MB of RAM, which keeps looking more and more like the minimum requirement to run BB OS 6. The Curve 3G 9330 will also receive an update to the new OS like has been promised. Simulators from RIM for developers have already been released that emulate the hardware inside both models and run BB OS 6. This looks like a nearly done deal. Too bad the Storm series still doesn’t look to be getting the OS update.
Are you willing to wait until RIM finally moves its BlackBerry line to dual-core processors before the new QNX OS comes out for them? Excited that the Bold 9650 and Curve 3G 9330 are both going to be receiving their long awaited software updates? Let me know.

Rim isn’t done. And Lazardis didn’t stumble in the interview. The two interviewers were idiots and couldn’t comprehend what he was saying.
1. It’s a 10 year plan
2. They are developing a powerful OS that will eventually make it’s way to BlackBerrys when the technology is sufficient enough.
3. He is doing that because his OS is powerful.
They kept asking the same questions and he kept answering. It doesn’t matter though. Those two interviewers are stupid. If you don’t think so, go watch their interview with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. They fumble around and can’t comprehend anything.

The 9650 came out in what? June/July and OS6 was promised a half a year ago? If an official OS6 release hasn’t come out yet, you know they are having issues with the hardware just being too damn slow and dated to run OS6. RIM’s failure to be able to forecast technology trends. By the time OS6 does come out for the 9650, if ever, RIM will be on OS7, that is if they are still around and not take over by Google. smh
