iPhone Rumors Rundown: iOS 4.2 and the Verizon iPhone

No iOS 4.2 release yet despite the nearly constant stream of rumors concerning its launch this month. Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that the update would come out in November and while the final beta build has gone out to developers to test with their apps, it still has not seen the light of day. iOS 4.2 will be a bigger update than 4.1 was to 4 and finally bring AirPlay and AirPrint to the iOS platform.

The newest best guess for when iOS 4.2 comes out? Sometime tomorrow actually. I’m more skeptical about these iOS 4.2 release dates than I am about the Verizon iPhone 4 at this point.

Now for some good news. Apple has released its Mac OS X 10.6.5 update and iTunes 10.1. The new version of Mac OS X enables AirPlay and AirPrint for when the new version of iOS 4.2 shows up. The iTunes 10.1 update does the same on Windows. The support is already out and now Apple just needs to get the show on the road.

But why the delay? According to Electronista, there is a Wi-Fi bug in 4.2 that Apple is trying to squash. Until the bug is fixed, no iOS 4.2. And until iOS 4.2 comes out, iPhones everywhere running iOS 4.1 are vulnerable to the widely talked about PIN security bypass. Oh, and that pesky daylight savings time change bug still needs fixed.

Some whacky rumors floating around right now are combining the iOS 4.2 rumor with the Verizon iPhone rumor. No. iOS 4.2 is not being delayed until the release of the Verizon iPhone. That’s just crazy talk. Ignore them.

Until this Wi-Fi bug is fixed, no iOS 4.2 for anyone. This is especially disappointing for iPad owners who will finally get multitasking in the updated operating system.  Apple has had a pretty good track record in the past when it comes to building hardware and software so it is better to just be patient for this. Remember Mark Papermaster? He was the scapegoat at Apple for the antennagate disaster on the iPhone 4. Don’t worry; he’s got a new job at Cisco.

Ready for iOS 4.2? Maybe it will be here tomorrow, maybe it won’t…
