iOS 4 Has Been Jailbroken: JailbreakMe 2.0 ‘Star’

The iPhone 4, the iPad and iOS 4 itself has finally been jailbroken. The news gets even better. The new JailbreakMe 2.0 ‘Star’ jailbreak requires no messy installation process. Instead, it comes in the form of a website that you visit with your iOS-powered device. Since the DMCA has been amended to make it legal to jailbreak and unlock cellular phones, the floodgates have opened.

While JailbreakMe ‘Star’ is still only compatible with iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1, hopefully a version compatible with iOS 4.1 will be released soon. However, if jailbreaking and unlocking (the unlock should be out sometime this week) your new iPhone 4 is something that you have your heart set on, I would advise against updating until it is certain that a jailbreak will be coming soon for the newer version of the operating system. Otherwise, you could be left out in the cold for literally months. Just imagine all your friends showing off their unlocked iPhone 4s since they did not take the bait Apple swings whenever you open up iTunes. It is like Apple wants to keep you locked into their cycle of updates to prevent you from doing whatever you want with your fancy hardware. Oh wait, they do.

The jailbreak is thanks “comex et al.” and a hearty thank you to them. To get started, swing over to with your iOS device’s Safari Mobile browser and follow the instructions. Of course, with any modification to your smartphone’s operating system, you should do a full backup just in case anything goes wrong. Also, it should be noted that even though jailbreaking has really come into its own right since the iPhone was first launched; there is a remote possibility that something could go horribly wrong and your device could end up bricked, etc. Do so at your own risk. If you have any doubts, I recommend doing a little Google research on how the jailbreaking process works and what risks are involved. It pays to be informed, especially if you are new to the hacking scene.

Now that jailbreaking is legal and a jailbreak for iOS 4 has come out, will you be doing it? Just think of everything that the iPhone 4 and iPad are capable of when they are freed from their Jobsian shackles and let to run wild. Hopefully we get an app that lets us do FaceTime over AT&T’s network.
