iOS 4.2 Launching Around November 7th
Apple’s next update to iOS 4 is expected to arrive on or after November 7th. The developer release or ‘Gold Master’ (GM) edition of iOS 4.2 has been available since last week and Apple has directed app makers to certify compatibility with the update. Now the actual release date of iOS 4.2 has gotten tipped off from an unlikely situation—a support document on Apple’s website.
iOS 4.1 has a buggy alarm clock app that rings users alarms an hour early or late when daylight savings changes the time. iPhone and iPod touch owners in Australia and the UK have already been affected. On Apple’s website, a support document for the issue says that the alarm bug will be fixed after November 7th and then later mentions that “After November 7th, 2010, you can set your alarms to repeat again.” A wink from Apple perhaps?
Since the operating system update is everything but official, the seventh of November certainly makes sense. iOS 4.2 is the unifying release of iOS that runs on all three devices: iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Once 4.2 comes out, the iPad will finally get multitasking, AirPrint and better corporate IT integration. Apple would not have made its last build of 4.2 a GM release unless it was sure that this is what it wants to put out. Barring any unforeseen bugs or security flaws that might be revealed in the next three days, expect to finally get the features Apple has been promising very soon.
Apple’s iOS 4.2 update will also fix the nasty iOS 4.1 security flaw that leaves iPhones vulnerable to a simple PIN bypass. Hitting a few buttons on a locked iPhone allows someone to bypass your security and access your email, contacts and make phone calls. The glitch has been confirmed in the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4. Apple has promised that this fix will be in iOS 4.2 and that November is when the update comes out. This is the more pressing concern for Apple and explains why it is so anxious to get this out to users.
Excited for iOS 4.2 to finally arrive? AirPlay and AirPrint essential features that you can’t believe Apple hasn’t already offered? Are the iPad owners out there ready for multitasking and Game Center? Been worried about the safety of your information on your iPhone since the PIN bypass story broke?
