Identifying your iPhone

Wondering what specific model of the Apple iPhone you may be holding right now?  Apple Inc. has just recently published a page on their support column, which intends to help iPhone owners and interested buyers identify the type of iPhone they are looking at or holding. With all the fake and clone iPhone 3G units being produced and available on the market, this bit of info should come in handy.

The current support column under iPhone only supports up to the iPhone 3G and its variations. There are five products on the list. This includes the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G (China), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3GS (China). Who knew they had so many iPhone 3G models? Without having to pry open the device, iPhone owners can easily check the model by accessing Settings, General, About then Model on their iPhones.

The iPhone is the first on the list, introduced back in 2007. Being the first along a long line of iPhones, it has understandably some of the lowest capacities, only capable of storing 4, 8 and 16 Gb. The 3G and 3G (China) both have capacities of 8 and 16 GB. Succeeding them is the 3G and 3GS (China) with greater capacities of 16 and 32 GB, a longer battery life, built in camera with video and editing capabilities.

With the first iPhone model, the device was encased with a metal case. The serial number could easily be located as it was etched at the rear end. With the succeeding iPhone models, the device was enclosed in a plastic casing. In comparison with previous iPhone models, the serial on the 3G and 3GS models is imprinted, instead of etched, on the SIM tray instead of the back of the case. The 3G and 3GS can be distinguished from each other as the 3GS has additional info imprinted at the rear area of the iPhone.
