No ‘GreenPois0n’ Yet, ‘Limera1n’ Jailbreaks iPhone 4 Anyway
Yesterday was supposed to be a glorious day for iOS jailbreakers everywhere—the GreenPois0n jailbreak solution from Chronic Dev Team was supposed to launch at 10/10/10 10:10:10. Instead, a veteran hacker named geohot upstaged them by releasing his own jailbreak for iOS 4.1 called ‘Limera1n’. The Chronic Dev Team then decided to postpone the launch of the GreenPois0n jailbreak:
“We are making the responsible decision as suggested by @MuscleNerd and @comex to delay greenpois0n while we implement the limera1n exploit.”
The reason why the Chronic Dev Team does not want two different jailbreak methods out and about at the same time is because one needs to be saved for the next iOS update that will close the currently exposed hole. Therefore, the hackers in the Chronic Dev Team are going to just take geohot’s jailbreak method and put it in their GreenPois0n tool. They will save the ‘SHAtter’ exploit that was originally going to go into GreenPois0n for a later date when they need it.
Is geohot a jerk for releasing his own, different jailbreak when the other team was supposed to release theirs? Hmm.
Regardless of how you feel, we are stuck with Lieara1n for the time being. If you are looking to jailbreak your iOS device with iOS 4.1, swing by limera1n.com and download the tool. It is pretty simple but make sure that you have backed up your device first. Also keep in mind that jailbreaking an iOS device is legal, but installing copyrighted material (like apps you don’t own) is not. This is also a beta version, and there are reports that it does not sometimes work properly. Those who don’t want to have to mess around with the procedure a few times might be better served by waiting a little while for a more stable version to release.
Something else you should keep in mind if you are planning on jailbreaking your iPhone: there is currently no unlock solution for iOS 4.1 yet. Geohot is supposedly working on one, as are others, but if your carrier isn’t AT&T and you are in the US, don’t upgrade your system software to 4.1 yet. Wait for an unlocking tool to come out first. Otherwise you might be stuck not being able to use your iPhone on carriers besides AT&T.
Remember, no unlock yet, Limera1n is the name of the jailbreak now, GreenPois0n will be delayed, backup before you hack and let me know what your first jailbroken app is going to be.Apple iOS, Apple iPhone, Limera1n, jailbreak, GreenPois0n
