New Version of Google Voice for BlackBerrys
Google has finally rolled out another update to its Google Voice application for BlackBerry users. Version 0.2.0.2 adds some new features, including banner notifications, quicker dialing and an easy way to check your credit balance. Of course, Apple iOS users are still left out in the cold and stuck using the clunky browser version when it comes to Google Voice, so let’s all have a good chuckle at their expense. It is not often that BlackBerry users get an app that iPhone users do not.
The speed improvements for dialing that the new version of Google Voice offers are actually pretty innovative. According to Google’s blog, the way the company managed to eke out extra speed was by something called “direct access numbers.” No longer does the app have to put in a request to Google’s servers to place your call. Instead, a unique number is assigned to each person you call. It also cuts down on data usage, but what was used before was negligible.
iPhone users (and iPod touch/iPad users who use it for text messaging and voicemails) still have not gotten an official app yet and Apple still appears to not be budging on the issue.
So what are you waiting for? Head over to m.google.com/voice and grab a copy of the new version. I have spoken before about how much I love the service and if you have not yet tried it, you really really should give it a try. It is free after all. I use it as a voicemail box replacement for a home phone since who really checks their cell phone’s voicemail anymore.
Leave a message and let me know what you think of Google Voice, if you are angry Apple will not let the app onto iTunes, and what you think of the update. Happy calling.BlackBerry, google voice
