The BlackBerry Storm 9570: Yes, it is a Refresh
The somewhat surprising news that leaked out earlier this week that Research In Motion (RIM) has two Storm models in the works has gotten more confirmation. The first of the two new Storms will probably be released pretty soon and is called the 9570. No word yet has come out on whether or not RIM will dub it the Storm3 or will save that title for its mysterious touchscreen smartphone that is expected to be more in line with flagship smartphones from its rivals.
What is the Storm 9570? It is a refresh of the Storm2 series. Same case, same weight, same everything really. Here is a quick overview of what is known:
The BlackBerry Storm 9570
- Carrier: Verizon
- OS: BlackBerry OS 6
- RAM: 512MB
- Processor: Updated, most likely the Marvell 624 MHz in the Torch 9800, Bold 9700, etc.
- Screen: Touchscreen with SurePress
- Everything else: Identical to the Storm2
The existence of this model pretty much puts the final nail in the coffin for OS 6 appearing on the Storm2. It was rumored that Verizon had stopped testing OS 6 on the Storm2 because of the limited RAM and processor speed the older model had. This model is basically identical to the Torch 9800 internally, as is the 9780. I don’t know why RIM keeps bothering to put out nonsense like this. Who wants a slightly upgraded Storm2?
At the same time, where does this leave the real Storm3 that we have been desperately waiting to get our hands on? You know, the one that was supposed to comparable in speed to a HTC Evo or iPhone 4 and bring RIM back into dominance. Is it still in the works? Or was this really it the whole time? If it is the latter, then I’m sorry RIM, you just failed. Bolting more RAM and a new processor into a phone that many loathe is not innovation. Let’s hope this is just a refresh to get OS 6 into Storm customers’ hands until the real Storm3 comes out.
Let me know what you think of this thing. Going to buy it just to get OS 6?
