The Blackberry Meets its Demise in Japan

The end of the Blackberry era hits Japan. In case you haven’t heard, Blackberry is back. While it seems cliché, they are indeed back with a new operating system and hardware. Before the launch of their new system and handsets the trouble equated with the company most certainly spelled demise. While the Z10 is doing well in Canada and the UK it looks like the Blackberry will ultimately meet its maker at least in one country. As Japan accepts the latest in Android, the Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 they unfortunately are set to lose the latest in Blackberry. As one option becomes available, another dies off in the shadows.

Just yesterday news of Blackberry’s plans for the land of the rising sun was met with some disappointment. The Nikkei business daily reported that Blackberry will cease offering handsets in the country. According to the report and later confirmed by Blackberry, it simply cannot validate the cost at which is paid to make necessary adjustments in the software for the Japanese language. Blackberry issued a statement surrounding their future in Japan to Engadget and it reads as such. “We are in the process of launching Blackberry 10 globally in key markets and we are seeing an positive demand for the Blackberry Z10 in countries where it has already launched. Japan is not a major market for Blackberry and we have no plans to launch Blackberry 10 devices there at this time. However, we will continue to support Blackberry customers in Japan.” The Nikkei report also goes on to mention that the Blackberry device has taken a considerable hit in the country pointing out that the handsets only make up 0.3% of the market share. With that being said, it sounds like a reasonable move on Blackberry’s part and with the “at this time” portion of their statement they seemingly leave the window of opportunity open as any wise business would. So no Blackberry 10 in Japan, but surely there will be a way around the issue if any developers or tinkerers feel so inclined.

Anyone affected by this? Is Blackberry making the right move by pulling out of Japan? Sound off below and let us know what you think and remember the largest selection of awesome Blackberry accessories are here in full.
