BlackBerry Curve 3G Closer to Getting BB OS 6 than Thought

Good news for BlackBerry Curve 3G enthusiasts (I know you exist so don’t pretend you don’t)–the smartphone might be getting BlackBerry OS 6 in the form of an update quicker than any of us thought. The guys and girls over at BBLeaks have managed to get their hands on a leaked version of BB OS 6.0.0.212 for Verizon’s BlackBerry Curve 3G (the 9330).

While I know that this is not the OS 6 release everyone has been waiting for for the Curve 3G (9300) on GSM networks, it looks like people really are hard at work getting OS 6 onto devices. I know this news won’t satiate those still looking for OS 6 for their BlackBerry Storm 2 or Bold 9700, but some news on OS 6 is better than no news isn’t it? I am still a little angry that the BlackBerry 9670 ‘Style’ is going to launch with OS 6 and the majority of BlackBerry customers out there still have not seen their OS 6 update. Could Research In Motion (RIM) please explain to us why they have not released OS 6 yet for the Curve 3G 9300 and Bold 9700 when they are all running pretty much identical hardware to the Torch 9800? Same processor even.

The Torch 9800 is already seeing leaked OS revisions, but the word on the Storm 2 has been noticeably absent besides the earlier rumor that it would not be getting the update. 256MB of RAM just not enough on Verizon’s CDMA network to support OS 6? Of course, Verizon has gone crazy lately in what it makes phone manufacturers do to get their units into Verizon customers’ hands. Maybe Verizon just wants more time to make sure its own proprietary app and music stores get into OS 6. Or maybe it is forcing RIM to make Microsoft’s Bing search engine the only one available in OS 6 on the network. Why not? It already made Bing the only integrated search engine on one flagship level Android OS smartphone this year.

Enough complaining about Verizon. It just seems that between all of the carriers, the grass looks greener on the other side. Until you hop the fence, sign the two year contract and realize that it is not all roses and puppies no matter who you go with for cellular service.

Let me know what you think of the RIM’s slow roll out for BB OS 6 onto existing (and even new) BlackBerrys in the comments.
