More Pics of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 Emerge

Now that the first picture of the yet unannounced BlackBerry Bold 9780 (possibly codenamed the ‘Onyx Delta’) has emerged, the floodgates to the swelling rumor river have opened. Driphter managed to snag a couple of new pictures showing the device turned on. While they are nothing to write home about, they do show that 9780 is running BlackBerry OS 6 and it looks like it might be coming out sooner than any of us expected.

Until we learn more, here is a quick rundown on what is known:

-          BlackBerry OS 6 (already seen up and running)

-          512MB of RAM (just to run OS 6)

-          5 megapixel camera (for those new OS 6 camera features)

-          microSD support

While all of these features are pretty much no-brainers and could have been guessed, I am hoping that the camera supports 720p high definition video. We will still have to see if the Bold 9700 that this is designed to replace will get OS 6, but I would not count on it. 512MB of RAM seems to be the new standard for smartphones and I would expect a BlackBerry with a whopping 1GB of RAM to emerge sometime next year as software developers start to push the limits of what 512MB can deliver.

In the meantime, why not leave a comment and tell me what you think of Research In Motion’s decision to refresh the Bold 9700 so quickly? Are you going to be interested in this new model or going to skip over it for something like the 9800? Touchscreen support with a QWERTY keyboard really does seem to be the best of both worlds.

I am working on my 1st Blackberry and love it. My son is on his 4th iPhone in a year that they have replaced for free so its not something he is doing to it and causes it to need to be replaced. I am getting ready to upgrade to the 9700 or its replacement in the next month or two. I have been nothing but happy with my 1st generation Blackberry Pearl and am looking forward to getting a Blackberry with 3G and Wireless. I use it mainly for business and don’t need the extra toys that things like the iPhone have.

Yawn indeed. The first thing I will say is this: if they can’t upgrade the bagillion dollar 9700 I bought only 6 months ago to BBerry 6, I will stop purchasing RIM devices. A flip phone pearl? A SLIGHTLY upgraded 9700? A touch screen slider with keyboard? These are not innovations, these are baby steps, hardly progress, in a market that demands epic strides in order to keep up. I loved you RIM, but you guys have shot yourselves in the foot and are not going to recover. This OS is easily 2 years too late and these phones are not enough to make up for your downfall.
