Apple’s iPad 2 to change everything….again
Apple is is known for taking risks on innovation. Successful examples of this include their iconic iPod the revolutionary iPhone and the granddaddy of them all the iPad and of course many others. The iPad was being built before the iPhone and its central idea was molded into a phone before the iPad was known to the public. So the perfected the phone angle and dropped the iPad and I’m certain that even Apple could not foresee how popular the device would be. The original iPad which will surely go down in the history books under multiple categories has been overthrown by the prince of tablets the iPad 2. As I write this and in the past weeks the interwebs have been circulating pictures and renderings of what are assumed to be the iPad 2. But it’s here folks the iPad 2 is here. Buyer’s remorse should be setting in right about now if you have picked up an iPad in the last month, let’s take a look at why.
Apple’s Keynote on the new iPad 2 was delivered today by none other than Steve Jobs saying “We’ve been working on this product for awhile, and I didn’t want to miss it.” It’s good to see him working with all of his health issues. The introduction to the iPad 2 starts by mentioning that 2011 will be the year of the copycats calling out Samsung, HP, Google, Blackberry and Motorola.
Details of the iPad 2
The iPad 2 is faster! Sporting a new A5 processor from Apple “We have a new chip we call A5”. The new A5 is a dual core processor. The iPad 2 will also sport a 2x faster CPU and will jump up to 9 times faster in the graphics department. This new A5 is claimed to pull the same power (same battery life) as the A4 and Apple reminds the world that this is the first dual core tablet to ship in volumes.
The iPad 2’s profile is a lot slimmer going from the 13.4mm profile of the iPad down to 8.8mm, “The new iPad 2 is thinner than your iPhone 4.”The iPad 2 will also carry a built in gyroscope that can be found on the iPhone and iPod touch. Jobs also stated that the iPad 2 will ship in a white form from day one and be readily available to At&t and Verizon customers out of the gate.
Yes the one detail that the world thought should have been found on the first iPad has made its way to the iPad 2. The iPad 2 will have a rear facing camera as well as a forward facing camera. Facetime to other iPad 2’s, iPhone 4’s and Mac’s has finally let Facetime come full circle within the Apple ecosystem. And for all of those Photobooth addicts out there, your wish has come true along with iMovie being enabled on the iPad 2.
Input and Output
HDMI out can also be found on the refresh of the iPad in the form of a small $39 dollar adapter. The small adapter gives output up to 1080p and will work with all apps. Simply put Jobs “Mirrored video output.” This adapter will also charge your iPad 2 when in use. Clutch and a dramatic improvement on how HDMI out is handled on many mobile devices.
New Apple Apps
With the addition of Facetime, PhotoBooth and iMovie it looks like the famed Garageband has made its way onto the new iPad. iMovie will cost users 4.99 and will give you the ability to precision edit your video, along with multi tracking audio capabilities as well as sharing video in HD an AirPlay to Apple TV mode. When introducing GarageBand Jobs stated, “Touch instruments, you can plug in a guitar if you want, but it’s got touch instruments. Guitar amps and effects, 8 track recording and mixing, 250+ loops”. GarageBand on the iPad 2 also has a sampler mode; record sounds spread it amongst some keys and play it on your iPad 2. There are a bunch more details on GarageBand for the iPad 2, but essentially a mobile DAW and production tool have just become truly portable. Oh and it costs 5 bucks.
Apple announced a new case option for the iPad 2. They call them Smart Covers. These cases are magnetically connected to the side of the iPad 2 and cover only the screen and bezel. Confirming their intelligence the SmartCovers will “automatically wakes the iPad when you open it, and puts it to sleep when it closes it.” They will come in polyurethane or leather variation and are not expected to be given away for free in regard to your signal issues.
